BMW 2-Series 220i 228i and 235i… Is BMW messing around with their model names again?
Similarly to the formula that BMW had used on the 3-Series, the 1-Series BMW Coupe and Convertible will now become the 2-Series Coupe and Convertible. At the moment, the current three and five door hatchbacks 1-Series will maintain the current 1 badging.

As for the US Market, expect both 2-Series models to make their way to our shores. Especially knowing how well the current E82/E88 have done and continue to do in their last year of sales. From the looks of it, the 2-Series seems identical in size to the current models. On the other hand, even though it is too early to talk about the exact model lineup for the 2-Series. Looking at the current more powerful European gasoline (petrol) models, and the US-based 3-Series models, gives us a clear idea on the engine choices that will be available in North America.

Expect a BMW 228i model powered by a version of the current N20 2-liter turbo inline four cylinder engine, producing 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. A second model, the BMW 235i, utilizing the N55 3-liter TwinPower single turbo inline six cylinder producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, BMW may introduce the 175hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three cylinder engine, that was revealed recently. Expect 220i or 223i badging to go along with BMW’s naming heritage. A 6-speed manual transmission will be standard equipment, while the current eight speed ZF-sourced torque converter automatic will be optional on all models.

Will BMW surprise us with an M235i addition for the European market using the 320 hp tuned M135i Hatch engine? With the lack of any talk about a 1M Coupe model (the 2M Coupe in this case), the answer is most likely for the coupe model.
