BMW is celebrating 25 years of the legendary V12 engine that has powered the 7-Series starting in 1986, until our present time. A walk down BMW V12 History lane must include the legendary 12-cylinder powered 850csi, which practically an M8 without the an actual M designation.

Debuted in the E32 750iL, this BMW 5.0 liter mill was the first German engine after WWII to sport that number of cylinders. It developed 300 hp, in par with some supercars of the time. Quickly, it became the standard in the luxury market prompting everyone, especially Mercedes-Benz with the S-Class threatened by BMWs bold move. Engineered for refinement, balance, and maximum performance from ground up.

In 1995, the E38 750iL came along with a V12 engine displacing 5.4 liters producing 322 hp and 361 lb-ft of torgue. Six years later, in 2002, the E65 760i and the E66 760Li debuted 6.0 liter V12 engine production 438 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque helping the flagship sprint to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The current 2008-up generation V12 engine is offered only on the F02 BMW 760Li, long wheel base model only. Power output is 544 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque from the 6.0L TwinPower Turbo engine that features High Precision Direct Injection and double-VANOS infinite camshaft. Sprint from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) comes in an impressive 4.6 seconds.
