Autocar put the exceptional 2013 BMW M135i hatchback against the new 2013 Mini Cooper Paceman John Cooper Works (JCW).
MINI John Cooper Works Paceman is equipped with ALL4 all wheel drive system, developing 218 hp (16kW) from a 1.6L Inline 4 cylinder with a single turbo. With the help of lowered suspension, improved braking hardware, and JCW body trim, the Paceman Cooper Works performance figures are as good dynamically as on paper. Factory claims that 0-60 mph (0-62 mph, 100 kph) is achieved in 6.9 seconds, in either a six speed manual, or a six speed automatic transmission. On the Contrary, the BMW M135i uses the famous N55 3.0 liter TwinPower single turbo I-6 engine, producing 320 hp and loads of torque. Power is channeled to the rear wheels via a very responsive 8 speed automatic and a conventional none limited slip differential. BMW claims a 0-60 mph (0-62 mph, 100 kph) in 4.6 seconds, eclipsing the Paceman JCW. Photo Gallery of the BMW M135i is here.
In all honesty, we thought that Autocar would side with the Mini knowing that the the origins are British, even with German ownership. Instead Autocar, was straight as an arrow, describing the BMW M135i as being massively faster than the Mini Paceman John Cooper Works. Not to mention the ride, interior quality and space, optional gadgets, and the fun factor are loads better in the BMW, given the similar price points. The only thing that MINI edged BMW with was fuel economy, 28 mpg average vs 31 mpg average on the day they tested the car.
