The F15 2014 BMW X5 M50d Tri-Turbo xDrive50i xDrive30d reveal was today May 29 2013.
The benchmark that changed the way we consumed SUVs. Once the first generation BMW X5 was released, it was not the alone in the luxury SUV market. The Mercedes-Benz ML was available for years, while the Lexus RX was for sale even earlier. Based on the 5 Series uni-body construction, the X5 was a game change, becoming the segment leader quickly. It redefined the way an SUV handled around corners, it defined what a sporty luxury SUV should look like, feel like, and drive like. Like a BMW 3 Series that is.

The all new F15 3rd iteration of the BMW X5 SAV, Sport Activity Vehicle in BMW speak, takes an evolutionary approach to its redesign language. Integrated aerodynamics, 4 Series Concept Coupe influenced bumper front air dams, clean classy yet sporty lines, and improved interior volume are among some of the enhancements to the 2014 F15 BMW X5. Naturally, there are design ques from the smaller BMW X3, as well as the BMW 5 Series.

Initially engine choices will include the BMW X5 xDrive50i with the upgraded 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 engine producing 450hp (330kW), similarly to the BMW 550i and the BMW 750i. Interestingly enough, the diesel tri-turbo monster 6 cylinder engine in the X5 M50d M Performance, producing 381hp (280kW) similarly to the engine in the BMW M550d will be available as well. As expected, a BMW X5 xDrive30d powered by a 3.0liter turbo diesel 6 cylinder producing 258hp (190 kW) and a mountain of torque will also be available at the time of launch. Yet more engine choices will be available at the end of the year, the X5 xDrive35i and the xDrive25d will be offered moving forward.

Electric power steering is standard on all versions of the 3rd gen F15 X5, with multiple adaptive steering settings depending on the model. Adaptive M tuned suspension is available with the M Performance Package that guarantees a flat ride around tight curves, in addition to improved ride comfort and road handling.

The real question is, what happens to the next generation F15 BMW X5M? If profitability of mass-produced performance SUVs and the competition from the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and the newly redesigned Range Rover Sport has anything to do with it, the X5M will not be left behind and should be expected a year after the initial launch of the standard models.
