Sport-tuned suspension coupled with increased engine output, work together to make the 2013 MINI John Cooper Works GP,easily the fastest production Mini in the company’s half century journey. Engineers at MINI extensively modded the turbo charged 4 cylinder engine forcing an output of 218hp (160kW) @ 6000 RPM and 192 lb-ft (260N-m) of torque @ a low 1750 RPM. Mind you, the power may not seem much in today’s horsepower explosion. However, the John Cooper Works GP weighs only 2557 lbs (1160kg). That’s 180lbs (82kg) less than the rear drive Subaru BRZ/ Scion FR-S/ Toyota GT-86 that everyone is talking about these days.

Clearly geared for optimum levels of grip and handling that even the front shocks are installed the wrong way. The piston rods are placed pointing downwards, with the sealed tube holding the fluids mounted upwards to help increase chassis stiffness longitudinally and laterally. Not to mention the independently adjustable coilover suspension, with a 20mm ride height flexibility, are also part of the package. Additionally, an upgraded brake system (330mm front, 280mm rear diameter rotors), sporty 17″ alloys, and super grippy 8.5 inch (215mm) section tires are just some of the details.

Muscular, beautiful, yet functional GP specific body kit including revised front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and rear spoiler. Recaro seating for two people only, a lucky passenger, and a very lucky driver. An interesting race-inspired fact about the 2013 MINI John Cooper Works GP is the sodium filled exhaust valve that provides better engine cooling. Or the overboost function that provides a temporary 15ft-lb (20N-m) of torque up from 192ft-lb (260N-m) to 207ft-lbs (280N-m), similarly to the BMW E82 1 Series M Coupe.

John Cooper Works GP was able to lap the Nurburgring Nordchlife in 8 minutes 23 seconds. The 0-60 (0-100 km/h) comes in a fast 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 150mph (242km/h). With a production run of only 2000 units, this Cooper GP will not last long on dealer lots.
